What’s Been Coming Up Lately (And Why It Matters Right Now)
Written for Ellen Fenton & Company Insurance
We’ve been having a lot of similar conversations lately and they all seem to come up this time of year.
Not because anything is going wrong, but because things are changing.
Spring in Western New York tends to bring a shift.
People are buying cars. Starting projects. Opening businesses back up. Hiring. Traveling more. Getting back outside. And what we’re seeing isn’t big mistakes, it’s just gaps that happen when life moves faster than your coverage.
1. Home Values Have Changed, But Coverage Hasn’t Always Kept Up
Between rising construction costs and home values across Western New York, a lot of homes are simply worth more than they were a few years ago.
We’ve had a handful of conversations lately where homeowners assumed they were “all set”, but their coverage hadn’t been updated to reflect what it would actually cost to rebuild today.
No panic here. Just something worth checking.
2. Spring Projects Can Change Your Risk (Without You Realizing It)
This is the time of year when people start:
Renovations or additions
Installing pools or outdoor structures
Hiring contractors or subcontractors
Tackling DIY projects
All normal. All exciting.
But depending on what you’re doing, your policy might need a quick update, especially when it comes to liability or coverage during construction.
3. Business Activity Picks Up Fast in the Spring
For a lot of local businesses, this is when things start moving again.
We’ve been talking with business owners who are:
Bringing on seasonal employees
Taking on larger jobs
Expanding services
Using new equipment or vehicles
The coverage that worked in January doesn’t always match what’s happening in April.
Again—not a problem. Just something to align.
4. Buying or Trading in a Vehicle? This Is Where Things Get Missed
This has come up a lot lately.
You buy or trade in a car, and somewhere in the process, you’re told to “just call your insurance.”
But here’s the thing, your dealership and your insurance agency should be working together to make that seamless.
You shouldn’t be left guessing what to ask or scrambling to get coverage in place.
A quick call (or better yet, coordination on our end) makes sure everything is set up correctly before you drive off the lot.
So What’s the Most Important Thing Right Now?
Honestly, it’s not about overhauling everything.
It’s just about checking in.
If something has changed in the last few months; your home, your business, your car, your plans— it’s worth a quick conversation to make sure your coverage still lines up.
No pressure. No big sales pitch.
Just clarity.
Final Thought
Most issues we see aren’t from people doing something wrong.
They come from things changing and insurance just not catching up yet.
Spring is a natural time to reset a lot of things.
This is just one of them.
